Hazelnut is the common name of shrub and tree species that make up the genus Corylus from the birch family (Betulaceae).
The leaves are simple, rounded, with double-toothed edges and a pointed tip. The flowers bloom in spring just before the leaves. It is a household. Male flowers are cat-shaped, 5–12 cm long, yellow in color. The female flowers are very small, hidden in buds throughout the winter, 1 – 3 mm long, red in colour. Nux fruit is 1-2-3 cm long, 1-2 cm in diameter, there is a goblet that completely or partially surrounds the shell. The shape and structure of the goblet is important in the identification of hazelnut species.
It is a tree with a maximum height of 5 meters and an average height of 3 meters, with leaves in summer and deciduous in winter. It has simple leaves and the leaf margins are double-toothed.
Shoots: the shoots of the previous year are brown, while the new shoots are yellow to gray.
Flowering time: March - April in Turkey, Flower colour: Yellow tones. Flower duration: until the end of May.
The lowest altitude suitable for habitation is above 10 meters, and the highest known altitude is 1600 meters.
